Wimp Sanderson

"Unforgettable"
Though often overshadowed by his sideline antics and colorful plaid wardrobe, Wimp Sanderson's ability to coach and motivate his squads is crystal clear when one looks at his record. In twelve years at the reins of his crimson and white troops Coach Sanderson won 267 games and lost only 119. He guided his teams to the SEC Tournament Championship Game nine times and won the title in 1982, 1987, 1989, 1990, and 1991. It is easy to see with a record like this why Sanderson, who won his first college game as a head coach on November 18, 1981, was selected by the Lexington Herald-Leader as the "SEC Coach of the Decade."

While his coaching days in Tuscaloosa have come to an end, they will not be forgotten. Nationally known sports artist Steve R. Skipper, in his recently completed work, has captured Wimp Sanderson's personality and intensity for fans to look fondly upon for years to come. The plaid may be gone from Tuscaloosa, but Wimp Sanderson and his accomplishments are truly "Unforgettable."
